“One piece of the forming puzzle back in Beijing that is still missing is a Chinese statement to the effect that, if he goes abroad to study, Mr. Chen and his family will still be welcome to come back home for visits, just like any other normal Chinese citizens,” said the respected China scholar Orville Schell, director of the Asia Society’s Center on U.S.-China Relations.
“Coming right now, such a statement would go a long way to evincing both China’s reasonableness and self-confidence in dealing fairly with such contentious issues as this one,” Mr. Schell said in an e-mail.
