“When China began to loft the idea that the South China Sea was “a core interest,” it began to precipitate concern among the nations of SE Asia and the US. While China has smartly not emphasized its claim of core interest since, but nonetheless it has caused a significant reaction, including President Obama’s state that the US would “pivot” towards Asia again. One hopes that a more collobrative approach will follow.”
